Michael Dougherty directed and co-wrote Godzilla: King of the Monsters, which hits theaters on May 5, 2019. Legendary's MonsterVerse and Godzilla: The Final Battle are the 35th and 36th Godzilla films, respectively, and the third Godzilla film entirely produced by a Hollywood company. In the film, Vera Farmiga, Millie Bobby Brown, Bradley Whitford, Sally Hawkins, Charles Dance, Thomas Middleditch, Aisha Hinds, O'Shea Jackson Jr., David Strathairn, and Zhang Ziyi feature. On Godzilla and Mothra, humanity must confront King Ghidorah, who has awoken Rodan and other Titans.
On May 31, 2019, Godzilla: King of the Monsters was released in theaters to mixed reviews from reviewers, with acclaim for its visual effects, action scenes, cinematography, and musical soundtrack, but criticism for the storyline, pace, tone, and characters. With a global revenue of $386 million, the picture failed to live up to its production and marketing expenses of $170–200 million. March 24, 2021 saw the release of Godzilla vs. Kong, which was a sequel to the first film.
This is what happened to Dr. Emma Russell, a paleobiologist who works for the Titan-studying group Monarch. She and her daughter Madison saw the birth of a larva called Mothra five years ago. Emma calms Mothra with the "Orca," a device that emits frequencies that Titans find appealing or make them behave in a different way. Former British Army Colonel Alan Jonah leads a group of eco-terrorists who attack the base and take Emma and Madison away from it. During the same time, Mothra flees and turns into an adult moth and butterfly under a nearby waterfall.
Dr. Ishir Serizawa and Dr. Vivienne Graham ask Emma's ex-husband and Madison's father, Dr. Mark Russell, for assistance. Mark is first hesitant owing to his hate of Godzilla, whom he blames for his son's murder in San Francisco, but finally accepts. A three-headed Titan nicknamed "Monster Zero." awaits Godzilla and the Monarch crew in Antarctica. Emma unleashes Monster Zero, who attacks Godzilla, devours Graham, and flees. Emma is eventually revealed to be a terrorist. Emma approaches Monarch from a Monarch bunker in Boston, arguing that the Titans must be woken to restore the Earth from human devastation.
And the Monarch squad entices Rodan to Monster Zero in Mexico. He ambushes Monster Zero and sever his left head after defeating Rodan. "Oxygen Destroyer," is used by the US Navy to destroy Godzilla during the battle. Monstrous Zero re-grows his missing head and wakes the other hibernating Titans, using Rodan as his slave. Madison disowns Emma as a consequence.
King Ghidorah is an ancient extraterrestrial that seeks to alter Earth, according to mythical writings. To contact Godzilla, Mothra exits from her cocoon and fly to Monarch's Bermuda headquarters. Finding Godzilla's hideout in a radioactive submarine. A nuclear weapon is used to speed up Godzilla's recovery. The warhead is manually detonated, resurrecting Godzilla and boosting his strength.
But despite this, Jonah continues on with the devastation of the earth that will be much worse than anything humanity can inflict. Madison hears this and takes the Orca as a result of her hearing. At Fenway Park, Madison accidentally draws the whole Titans team with her radio frequency broadcast. To eliminate the Orca, Ghidorah makes landfall in Boston. Godzilla, assisted by Monarch soldiers, comes to confront him in combat. After discovering that Godzilla's radiation levels are growing, Mark organizes a team to rescue Madison and flee the city. When Mothra comes to assist Godzilla, she is caught by Rodan, who she eventually defeats, but not before suffering injuries as a result of her fight.
Ghidorah defeats Godzilla and prepares to kill him, but Mothra sacrifices herself and gives Godzilla her energy. In order to keep Ghidorah away from Godzilla, Mark, Emma, and Madison revive the Orca. For Mark, Madison, and the Monarch team, Emma sacrifices herself to chase Ghidorah away. Godzilla overcomes Ghidorah after gaining strength. Rodan and the other Titans surround Godzilla and bow.
It was announced in April 2015 that Aaron Taylor-Johnson would not be returning to reprise his role in the sequel and that his participation was contingent on the choice of co-star Emily Edwards. Legendary Pictures announced in October 2015 that Godzilla and Kong will face off in a picture named Godzilla vs. Kong, which was scheduled for release in 2020. With "centered around Monarch" Legendary is building a shared film series to unite Godzilla and King Kong with "brings together Godzilla and ... King Kong in an ecosystem of other giant super-species, both classic and new."
Legendary will remain with Universal Pictures, but will work with Warner Bros. on the property. Warner Bros. revealed in May 2016 that Godzilla 2 will be delayed from June 8, 2018 to March 22, 2019, and that Edwards would leave the sequel to focus on lesser projects.
Michael Dougherty and Zach Shields (both of whom worked on Krampus) wrote the script for Godzilla 2. A day later, Dougherty was in talks to film Godzilla 2. In the same month, Legendary revealed that Pacific Rim: Uprising will be produced in Wanda's Qingdao Movie Metropolis in Qingdao, China. Legendary confirmed in December 2016 that Godzilla 2 will be titled Godzilla: King of the Monsters.
Legendary's only job was to include Monarch, Rodan, Mothra, and King Ghidorah in the movie. For Dougherty's script, he and his team had to start over from the beginning again. First, Dougherty made a rough two-page treatment that had some simple lines and rough sketches of the people who were in it. Following that, Dougherty and co-writer/executive producer Zach Shields set up a writer's room. Borenstein was also there. Ten people worked together to improve the treatment. The script took a year to write.
Dougherty rewrote lines throughout shooting and post-production. Balancing the monster spectacle "while still creating a story with human characters that we care about." he said. A bunch of heroes, Dougherty felt, might be formed from the organization. So the movie became an ensemble piece.
Dougherty and Shields created a human narrative line that could stand alone without the monsters and substitute science fiction aspects with issues like climate change or eco-terrorism. As many of the human and monster narrative threads merged, Dougherty believed the third act was the most difficult to write for. Emma's speech to Monarch was rewritten multiple times, according to Shields It was Shields and Dougherty's intention for the speech to ask the audience to trust mankind or Mother Nature.
Mark and Sam were initially described as long-time friends in the original screenplay, but their relationship was later changed. In subsequent versions, this was changed from Sam to Serizawa so that Mark's driving force would be Serizawa. "humanity's inability to not interfere." is shown by the Oxygen Destroyer, which Dougherty included in the design. Dougherty and Shields made the decision to kill Godzilla in the middle of the film since this is something that has never been done before in Godzilla films.
The monsters are now referred to be "MUTOs" instead of "Titans" throughout the film. Dougherty intended the monsters' designs to exude a divine presence and inspire awe, saying, "What you're trying to do is give these animals a presence that would make primitive man kneel and adore this god... This isn't simply going to look like a bunch of lizards. That's taken care of by Jurassic Park. These must be separate. To succeed, they must find their own unique path. They're the Titans." It was directed by the director to "distill those silhouettes and those key traits into something more modern." "very large animals with a distinct thought process." were vital to the filmmaker, who wanted the Titans to be regarded as more than simply monsters.
He wanted to design something "beautiful, and feminine, and elegant, and looked like a true goddess, but also dangerous if she had to be." for Mothra. He tried to keep the color scheme and the eye-spots on her wings from the original 1961 form. The eye-spots were created to look like Godzilla's eyes to link Mothra to Godzilla. Like genuine moths, Mothra has lengthy legs to protect herself against other monsters.
Designers were instructed by the film's director to keep Ghidorah's Eastern dragon influence and to prevent any Western dragon influence "They're not your typical dragons from the west. That's right, they were the directives from the start... Because we don't want our dragons to look like dragons from Game of Thrones." Designing Ghidorah was also done by Legacy Effects. Dougherty compared Ghidorah to Rip Van Winkle, adding that the picture is not a comedy but has curiosity and brutality. Ghidorah was defined as "not part of the natural order." by producer Alex Garcia.
On August 13, 2019, the film was released on Digital HD, and on DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K Ultra HD on August 27, 2019, respectively. HDR10, HDR10+, Dolby Vision HDR, and a Dolby Atmos audio are all included in the 4K edition. The Best Buy 4K UHD Combo steelbook is a retailer-exclusive. On the NPD VideoScan First Alert list, its home media release ranked first. The DVD made $12.6 million in the United States and copyright, while the Blu-ray earned $23.5 million, for a total domestic video sales of $36.1 million.
A green-screen photo booth was made available that enabled spectators to be put in scenes from the film. Regal Cinemas gave IMAX guests souvenir tickets and a mini-poster of the ticket picture. The collectable tickets were provided in two sizes: Standard (measured 4" × 7.5") and Godzilla-sized (5.125" × 9.5"). In June 2019, the film earned a one-month theatrical extension in China.
When the movie starts, it's in 2014. Andrew Russell, the Russell family's oldest son, died in the deadly battle that took place there. Mark Russell (Kyle Chandler) and Emma Russell (Vera Farmiga) have lost their young daughter Madison, but they are still holding on to their oldest son, Andrew (Lexi Rabe). Look up: Emma can't help but notice Godzilla. He was somewhere after he had a fight with the MUTOS.
Emma works as a paleobiologist for Monarch and lives with Madison in the present. Mark and Emma are separated (now played by Millie Bobby Brown). Her Orca device can create frequencies used to communicate with Titans. Mark keeps in touch with them for Madison's sake. Emma and Madison subsequently fly to China to see Mothra's birth with other experts.
They then show him that they have Godzilla restrained, but they are now releasing him free so that he may trust them. Godzilla then swims for Antarctica, and Monarch follows.
Then Godzilla enters the fray. Godzilla tries to use his atomic breath on Ghidorah, but he dodges and discharges lightning from all three heads, throwing Godzilla back into the ice. Ghidorah then begins to rampage, murdering a number of individuals, including Graham.
In the aftermath, Monarch gets in touch with Emma, who is willing to help Jonah and the Titans get free. When they think about it, the Titans are the planet's rightful rulers, and they might be able to bring balance back to the world that man has messed up. The way Mark sees it, she did this in retaliation for Andrew's death.
Emma and Jonah fly to Mexico to rescue another Titan. The city begins to be evacuated as a result of the disaster. They make their way to an active volcano to release Rodan, “the Fire Demon”. In the midst of Monarch's squadron of fighter pilots, he emerges. Some of the pilots are devoured by the winged beast, but they are no match for it, as he barrel-rolls through the air and finishes the rest.
Ghidorah travels to the volcano's summit to regrow his head. His cry wakes the rest of the Titans. In reaction, the Titans wreak havoc and ruin on their territories, killing countless people. Rodan even bows to Ghidorah's leadership since, as Monarch points out, Ghidorah has established himself as the Titans' alpha.
Mothra emerges from her cocoon beneath a waterfall, flying for Godzilla, who is still alive but weakened and healing underwater. Monarch finds them as Mothra talks to Godzilla. The crew concludes Mothra is the monster queen, thus she and Godzilla “have a thing”. Ilene also points out that Ghidorah was a feared Titan who would challenge Godzilla for supremacy.
Mark, Serizawa, Ilene, and Coleman proceed to Godzilla's location to try to awaken him, however it's revealed that Godzilla's recuperation procedure might take years. Seeing how Titans like Godzilla thrive on radiation, the scientists devise a nuclear cure. Because the sub's weapons systems are damaged, Serizawa decides to take the nuke down and set it off personally. He bids his comrades goodbye and makes his way up to Godzilla, his closest encounter. He kisses a barely cognizant Godzilla before committing himself and detonating the bomb. Big G reappears, stronger than ever, and launches his atomic breath into the sky.
As of this point, Emma realizes that her initial plan has gone awry, and that Ghidorah is leading the Titans to bring even more damage. She's been called a monster by Madison herself. Emma informs Jonah that because Fenway Park and much of Boston have been evacuated, they can use the Orca to broadcast a frequency through there, but Jonah looks away from her. With the Orca stolen, Madison makes her way to Fenway Park where she transmits a frequency powerful enough to draw the Titans there. Godzilla and Ghidorah arrive, and they proceed to wreak havoc throughout the city while Madison flees for her life.
For this conflict, mankind is as much a part of it as the Titans are, Mark explains to the Monarch crew. They can also see that Godzilla is about to go off with a tremendous nuclear pulse. During Mark's search for Madison, they come across Emma, who has fled to the city to avoid being captured by Jonah. They locate Madison behind the ruins of their former house, unconscious but alive, after determining that she had gone there.
A rematch between Godzilla and Ghidorah ensues, with the three heads gnawing on Godzilla's flanks. Mothra swoops down to rescue Godzilla by encasing the three heads in a web of light from the sky. He reappears and fights Mothra, almost claiming her life until she outwits him and uses her stinger to puncture his shoulder and kill him. Mothra joins Godzilla's side after Ghidorah has crippled him. Despite her best efforts, she is unable to reach Ghidorah before the monster's lightning vaporizes her and replenishes Godzilla's energy.
In a fit of rage, Godzilla rises to keep attacking his enemy. They try to get the hell out of Boston at the same time. Emma has to do something good because of what she did. When Mark and Madison beg her to join them on the plane out of the city, she says no. She gets in a van and uses the Orca to get Ghidorah to come to her by herself. He fires a blast at her, but it only knocks her out of the van. This gives Godzilla enough time to build his nuclear pulse. Look up before you die and say "Long live the king." As he stands there, skyscrapers start to fall down around him, and everything else starts to burn. Finally, Big G delivers a powerful blast toward Ghidorah, first to singe off his wings and then to take out his two side heads. After one more blast, the city is burned to ashes, and it looks like Ghidorah's head is coming out of the smoke. Except Godzilla has it in his mouth, and he kills the beast once and for all.
Soon, the other Titans arrive in what remains of Boston. Even Rodan bows before Godzilla. Mark, Madison, and the rest of Monarch watch in disbelief. Godzilla then lets out a victorious roar.
During the credits, we see newspaper articles reporting the discovery of a Mothra egg (meaning she can return). We see other cave paintings, including one in which Godzilla confronts the world’s second most well-known Titan…KONG.
Godzilla is seriously damaged by a bomb fired by the military. Monarch understands that a nuclear would speed up his recovery, so he's hiding down beneath. Dr. Serizawa is willing to die in order to bring Godzilla back to life.
Emma breaks up with Jonah after she takes the Orca to Fenway Park to call the Titans there. She goes to Boston to get Madison after she takes the Orca to Fenway Park. This leads to an epic fight between Godzilla and Mothra and Ghidorah and Rodan, which is a lot of fun to watch. In the beginning, Mothra beats Rodan. As Ghidorah weakens Godzilla, she makes a sacrifice to be vaporized by Ghidorah, but her essence will be used to help Godzilla grow stronger. Emma stays behind to try to get Ghidorah away from Godzilla with the Orca, but she dies in the process, so she doesn't help Godzilla. From the nuke, Godzilla then sends out a nuclear pulse. This gives him enough power to completely destroy Ghidorah. It's then that the other Titans come to Godzilla and bow to him as the new leader of the group.
